Imagine this situation
You have written a letter.
Now ask yourself:
- Is the letter useful if it stays in your room?
- No.
Someone has to carry the letter to another person.
That carrying process is called transmission.
The same happens in computers.

Transmission simply means
The process of sending data from one device to another.
What is Data?
Before transmission, there must be something to send.
That “something” is called data.
Examples:
- Text
- Images
- Videos
- Voice
- Music
- Documents
- Emails
Everything is data.
Example
You send Hello to your friend on WhatsApp.
“Hello” is the data.
What is Communication?
Communication means
Exchange of information between two or more devices.
Example
You talk to your friend.
You speak.
Friend listens.
Friend replies.
This is communication.
The same happens between computers.
Laptop → Router → Internet → Mobile
Difference between Communication and Transmission
Many students confuse these.

Example — Phone call:
You speak. Voice travels. Friend hears. Voice comes back.
Entire process = Communication

Real-life Example
Imagine Mumbai and Delhi.
You want to send a parcel.
- Parcel = Data
- Road = Transmission Medium
- Truck = Signal
- Delivery = Transmission
Exactly the same idea works in networking.
What is a Signal?
This is the most important concept.
Computers cannot send data directly.
They first convert data into signals.
Why?
Because wires cannot carry words.
A wire cannot carry HELLO.
It only carries:
- Electrical energy
- or Light
- or Radio waves
These are called signals.
Definition: A signal is an electrical, optical, or electromagnetic representation of data used for transmission.
Example
Suppose you type HELLO.
Computer converts it into 101010101001010.
Then into electrical voltage.
That voltage travels through the cable.
At the other end, Computer converts it back into HELLO.
Transmission Process
User types HELLO
↓
Computer converts into bits 010101010
↓
Converts into signal Electrical Pulse
↓
Travels through cable
↓
Receiver gets signal
↓
Converts into bits 010101010
↓
Displays HELLO
This entire process is called data transmission.
Why do we need Transmission?
Without transmission:
- No Internet
- No WhatsApp
- No YouTube
- No Email
- No Online Banking
- No Cloud Storage
Every network depends on transmission.
Types of Transmission Media (Overview)
Signals travel through a path called Transmission Media.
Two types:
Guided Media (Wired)
Examples:
- Twisted Pair Cable
- Coaxial Cable
- Fiber Optic Cable
Signal travels through a physical cable.
Unguided Media (Wireless)
Examples:
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- Satellite
- Radio
- Mobile Network
Signal travels through air.
What is a Channel?
A channel is the path through which signals travel.
Examples:
- Fiber cable
- Copper wire
- Wi-Fi
- Satellite
Everything is a communication channel.
Simple Analogy
- Message = Data
- Language = Signal
- Road = Transmission Medium
- Sending = Transmission
- Talking = Communication
